TRADE WITH FIJI
DOMINION LOADING COSTS INFLUENCE ON FREIGHT RATES "This is a remarkable admission by tho department that loading costs in the Dominion are twice as high as in Australia,'' said Mr. Gainer Jackson at a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. "It is practically impossible for many New Zealand "goods to find a market in Fiji," lie added. Members, were discussing further correspondence on the decline of New Zealand trade with Fiji received from the Department of Industries and Commerce. Existing freight rates were based •primarily on costs of loading and unloading, the department's letter stated, the distances involved in the case having little influence. While the distance from New Zealand to Fiji was less than that from Australia to Fiji, loading costs in New Zealand were almost double those in Australian .ports. • A -letter "on the subject of freight rates received from the Union Steam Ship Company stated that handling charges had so "greatly increased during the past year or two, owing to increased wages and reduced working time, as to preclude any possibility of freight reductions.
