TELEGRAM TO FIANCEE
FEIGNED SERIOUS ILLNESS FRIEND'S NAME SIGNED [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Thursday On a charge of forging the name >f an acquaintance to a telegram, a young man, Edward Geoffrey Ryan, appenred in the Rotorua Police Court this morning. Senior-Sergeant E. J. Carroll said that when the friend was in hospital, accused had sent a telegram to his own fiancee stating: "Eddie seriously ill. Not expected to live. Any messages same address. Signed, N. Pock." Accused had no authority to use his friend's name, and in making it appear that he himself was seriously iP had caused great worry to his fiancee, who had communicated with the Rotorua police to see if the message was genuine.
Accused, who had no explanation to offer the Court, was fined £2 and costs.
