JEWEL THEFT
SINGER AND WIFE LOSS ON MONTEREY STATE-ROOM KIFIED TIBBETTS VICTIMISED (Recoived October 4, 7.5 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO. Oct. 3 Officials of the Matson Line at San Pedro reveal that Mr. Lawrence Tibbett, famous singer, and his wife were robbed of 50,000 dollars' worth of jewels while they were on board, the Monterey., Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation have been called in on the case. ■ '■ ■ The jewels were mis.sing when the ship reached quarantine this morning. G-men vainly searched every piece of baggage before the passengers were allowed to leave the Monterey. Mrs. Tibbett explained that she had placed 28 pieces of jewellery in a drawer in a dressing table at 7 p.m. yesterday before going to, dinner. Mr., and Mrs. Tibbett returned to their state-room at 9 p.m. for a. moment be* fore visiting friends on another deck. They went to the ship's ball at 11 p.m. and returned to their state-room • at 1.30 a.m.' .' \ ■'; : " ' Anna 1 Anfinson, Mrs ; Tibbett's personal maid, said she was BUro' the jewels were safely locked in a leather case in the drawer when she retired at 11 p.m... The G-men found the velvet -lining of the jewel case stuffed under a lifebelt beneath one of the beds in the Tibbett3' state-room.
