DAY OF ATONEMENT
SACRED JEWISH OCCASION; ORIGIN IN BIBLICAL TIMES The Day of . Atonement, the most solemn day in the Jewish calendar, or Yom Kippur as it is known, is being observed to-day as a close holiday by the Jewish community. It was ushered in at sunset last evening and will close, at sunset this evening with the blowing of the shofar, or ram s horn. The occasion calls for fasting and the celebration of religious services at the Synagogue. The Itev Alexander Astor conducted services last ...evening before a very large congregation, and further ones will be held throughout to-day The Dav of Atonement has its oriftin'in Biblical times, and is held to be very sacred to members of the Jewish faith.
