TERRITORIAL ARMY DISPLAYS IN AUCKLAND PARADES AND DEMONSTRATIONS Army Recruiting Week in Auckland opened last night when the Ist Auckland Regiment jiaraded in the city, and a demonstration was held in the Drill Hall, Rutland Street. LieutenailtColonel R. Tilsley, M.C., was in charge of the parade, while the organisation of the week's drive for recruits for tho territorial army is in the charge of Major H. I). McHugh, M.C., N.Z.S.C. A programme of parades and demonstrations has been arranged for each evening until Friday, and, in addition, two army motor-vans equipped as mobile recruiting offices are being maintained from 8.30 a.m. each day by the permanent staff and, during each evening, by the section of the Territorial Force conducting the parade and demonstrations. The First Parade Tho recruiting week was inaugurated by the marching of the Ist Auckland Regiment from the Drill Hall along Queen Strt>ct at about 7.30 o'clock last evening. The motor-cycle platoons and regimental band were also in the parade, which halted in Victoria Street while demonstrations, lasting about 10 minutes, were given of heavy machinegun training.
The regiment then marched to the Quay Street intersection, where the display was repeated, and from there the parade went to ICarangahape Road, where the work was repeated. Demonstrations of the work of the regiment were also given at the Drill Hall during the evening. j - The mobile recruiting offices continued the work in Queen Street and Karangahapc Road after the regiment had returned to the Drill Hall, band music and addresses on the need of recruits and the advantages of joining the defence forces being amplified through loud-speakers on the vans. As the result of last night's drive a number of young men sought further "information from 'the Drill Hall and several offered themselves as recruits, and it is hoped that the week's demonstrations will result in a substantial increase in the strength of the territorial army. The demonstrations to-night will be carried out by the Ist Field Brigade and will .include a searchlight display from Mount Eden. To-morrow evening the parade will be given by tho New Zealand Engineers, Army Service Corps and Medical Corps, and on Thursday by tho Northern Coast Artillery Group.* On Friday evening a display will bp given at the Drill' Hall.
