INTOXICATION CHARGE / * * EARLY MORNING ARREST Charged with being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motoroar in Hobson Street on September 20, Herbert AHan Bowio, motor mechanic, aged 29, pleaded guilty when be appeared in the Police Court, before Mr. C. R. ,Orr Walker, S.M., yesterday. Sub-Inspector Fox prosecuted, and Mr." Robinson "appeared for accused. Sub^^pecto?,Fox- i «aKl.that,,at ;; 4.l& i a.m. on"'Tuesday, September 20, Constable Irving, who was on duty in Hobson Street, saw a car parked outside a house. Attracted by loud noises, the constable went to the car and found two men there. Accused was behind the steering wheel and was under the influence of liquor. "The constable said accused was not drunk in the * ordinary sense of tho word/' added-Mr. Fox. "He smelt of iftpior, was unsteady on his feet, 'and argumentative." * Counsel said accused admitted the charge, but . submitted there were <,two factors* material to the question of punishment. The hour was early, when there was little traffic, to be menaced, and the evidence showed accused' was only slightly intoxicated. ' - "This is a case which will be met by a substantial fine," observed the magis fcrate. t ' Accused was fined £25. his licence was suspendedj and he will be prevented from obtaining a licence for 18 months Seven days were allowed for payment of the fine.
