HEAVY INWARD TRADE
CARGOES FOR DOMINION PANAMA CANAL FIGURES Indicating the large import ti'ade of the Dominion, the three heaviest shipments of general cargo to pass through .the Panama Canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific for the mouth ended August 10 were carried by vessels cn route to New Zealand, according to returns in the Panama Canal Record. In this period nearly 300 ships travelled through the canal in that direction. The heaviest general cargo was that of the Shaw. Savill and Albion steamer Mamari, en route from Liverpool to Wellington and Auckland, her consignment being 11,443 long tons. This was exceeded by only one other ship, a tanker with 11,700 tons of oil. The next heaviest shipment of any type was carried by the M.A.N.Z. Line steamer City of Pittsburg, from Montreal to Auckland. Her cargo, given as 9579 long tons, was the largest ever brought from Eastern Canada to New Zealand. The third heaviest consignment was in the New Zealand Shipping Company's motor-ship Opawa, from Liverpool to Auckland, with 9340 long tons. When she arrived here the draught of the Opawa, of 32ft. llin. by the stern,-was among the deepest recorded at the port.'
