CENSORSHIP OF PLAYS
INDIGNATION EXPRESSED DAME SYBIL THORNDIKE War on stage censorship has been declared by Dame Sybil Thorndike, who lias stated that she will never make a speech without condemning the censorship. According .to Dame Sybil it can be killed only by ridicule and because of it people who have anything to say use any medium but the theatre, for they realise that their work would not pass the censor. r"'J:he question of introducing living people as stage characters needs clearing up," she continues. "Every case sliuuld bo judged 011 its merits. By having a hard and fast rule, it interferes with the supply of plays. Jf we could stage plays dealing with current events there would be a good supply of plays, perhaps not quite first class, but well worth performing. As it is we have to go back 50 years and wait for a masterpiece."
