TAX ON DOMESTICS

PROTEST BY HEADMASTER POSITION OF COLLEGE STAFF [I!Y TEIiKGItAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON, Wednesday The payment by domestics at Wellington College of a boarding tax of 8d in the £1 in addition to the. employment tax was the subject of a letter from the headmaster, Mr. W. A. Armour, at yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Colleges Board. "The Government formulated a policy of the restoration of all cuts," said Mr. Armour, "but this board or hostel tax has remained and in my opinion its imposition is iniquitous. 1 am writing, therefore, to ask tho board to make an effort to have all our domestic staff relieved from paying this tax. Why should it be paid by domestics who are not civil servants because they work in a Government institution? This tax is not, and cannot be imposed on domestics in private employment. " I must say that there has always been a strong objection raised by our domestics to the payment of this tax and time and again I have been asked to have them relieved of its payment. We have many times lost domestics because of its imposition and I may say my sympathy is entirely with them iii the protest made about it." Mrs. Knox Gilmer: Under the Social Security Act, they'll have to pay a shilling in the pound. It was dpcided to send a copy of the letter to tho Education Department.
