YOUNG ENGLISH GIRL EUROPEAN TITLE WON A 17-vear-ohl girl, Betty Slade, gave Britain its first title in the European swimming championship at the Empire Pool. Wembley. Another British girl, Miss Kdna Child, was third, Miss Daunierlang (Germany) obtaining second place. Miss Slade began diving at the age of 13 and two years ago won the springboard diving championship of England at her first attempt. She won that title again in 1937 and has retained it for a year. Her coach, who is a former Sussex diving champion, was impressed by a casual observation of her at the 11 ford Baths one day, and persuaded her to take up diving, promising to make her a national champion.
