FIFTY YEARS AGO

GERMANY AND SAMOA The presumption that Germany would annex Samoa following the uprising there was expressed in the newspapers of 50 j'ears ago. The following is from the New Zealand Herald of September 29, 1888: . . .. "Further details of tho Samoan civil war show that both parties are well armed and that each man is equipped with from three to four hundred rounds of ammunition. "The adherents of Maleitoa, to the number of 5000 ; are camped at Upolu. After tho attack on the Government soldiers on the nights of the 12th and 14th, Matafo, the- King-elect, was anointed with the title of Maleitoa 11. "A strong feeling prevails that eventually Germany will annex Samoa unless America steps in and offers protection to tho country."
