NOT WORTH A WAR
THE SUDETEN GERMANS SIR B. BRUCE-PORTER'S VIEWS PHYSICIAN TOURING EMPIRE VANCOUVER, Sept, 20 In an interview at Victoria, British Columbia, to-day Sir Bruce BrucePorter, a prominent figure in British medical and, Army circles, who is to sail for Australia to-morrow, said he did not believe the Sudetens were worth involving Europe in a war. He had no patience with those who were saying that they would rather fight now and get it over with.
If hostilities were staved off even for n year something was likely to be accomplished. Mr. Chamberlain was wronged in many quarters for his stand. He had never promised that Britain would fight for the Czechs.
A physician and surgeon who was famous as a commanding officer of hospitals in the Great War, Sir Bruce Bruce-Porter, left England on July 2.3 by the Empress of Britain on a world tour. He will be away for a year and will come to New Zealand probably in March. About two months are to bo spent in the Dominion, and both islands will be visited. This part of the tour will bo of special interest to Sir Bruce since his late wife (formerly Mrs. Honevman) came from Auckland. Sir Bruce commanded hospitals in England and Mesopotamia (Irak), during.thp war and was well known to thousands of Dominion soldiers who were cared for in Wandsworth Hospital, of which Sir Bruce was Commanding Officer. He is to spend two months in Australia, six weeks in the Netherlands East Indies, and two months in America, in addition to his visit to New Zealand. On tho death of Lady Bruce-Porter, daughter of the Rev. D. Bruce, and widow of Dr. J. H. Honevman, who was a Lady of Grace of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in England, Sir Bruce retired from active practice to devote more time to social service work than his busy professional life would permit.
