THE LEAGUE CODE
AUSTRALIAN VISITORS MATCHES IN AUCKLAND •* MANAGER ACCORDED WELCOME "I have toured with many football teams, including one to England, but my visit to New Zealand in 1931 was the greatest trip I have over had, said Mr. J. Quiulan, manager of the Sydney Eastern Suburbs team, in acknowledging a welcome last ei ening, extended by the management committee of tho Auckland Rugby League. "The hospitality of Aucklanders on that occasion was marvellous, and 1 know that on this trip the players are going to thoroughly enjoy themselves." Mr. Quintan a.ldcd that the present team was really hero to play football and the combination was a good one, capable of giving a high-class exhibition. The visiting team was ,not taking any chances and a week's serious training was being indulged in. The team was\ here firstly to play League football and the games in Auckland would bo a test of strength between the teams of Sydney and Auckland. Eastern Suburbs was tho second best team in Sydney, and, if Marist or any of the other clubi could beat the visitors Mr. Qiiinland said lie could then vouch for the standard in Auckland as being higher than that in Sydney. Ho was keenly awaiting tho ro suits.
Mr. Quinlan said he had always admired New Zealand football, and ho expressed tho hope that one day there would be only one code in the two countries. In conclusion, Mr. Quinlan said ho did not caro which team won, so long as the games were enjoyed by the public, nnd he expressed the thanks of all the players for the fine spirit which was behind the invitation extended to the Eastern Suburbs team. Mr. G. Grey Campbell, chairman, who welcomed Mr. Quiulan, expressed the hope that the team would make the .most of its stay in Auckland, and he assured tho visitors that the public was keenly looking forward to the three matches. The code here was greatly indebted to Eastem Suburbs and Hie visit would grcutly benefit club football. , ~ Arrangements for entertainment, said Mr.* Campbell, included a game of golf for a number of players at the Akurana links this afternoon. Training for Saturday's game would be finalised at Carlaiv Park this morning. In answer to the question of replacements, Mr. Quinlan said tho games were not considered international tests, and he agreed that injuroi players could be replaced up to the starting time of the second spell. The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, wrote expressing regret that, owing to illness, he would be unable to attend Carlaw Park on Saturday. He hoped for a good game between Marist and Eastern Suburbs.
PAYMENT TO LINE-UMPIRES
REFEREE FOR SATURDAY NEXT Thp question of the payment of lineumpires in first-class matches was reopened at last evening's meeting of the Auckland Rugby League as the result of a protest by tho Referees' Association, which claimed that line-umpires should be treated the same as the referee controlling the fixture. The chairman, Mr. Campbell, said that, if payment were to be made the services of the usual line-umpires who officiate each week at club matches should be firstly recognised. Several delegates opposed the question of payment on principle, but it was eventually decided to make a payment to the recognised lineumpires. ~ . , Mr. F. Thompson was appointed referee, and Messrs. D. Taylor and J. Gedge linesmen for next Saturday's match between Eastern Suburbs and Marist. , . The appointments of referees for the match next Wednesday against Manukau, and that against Richmond on Saturday week were deferred until Saturday evening.
