YEAR OF PROGRESS
GIRLS' FRIENDLY SOCIETY NEW BRANCHES FORMED REPORT TO ANNUAL MEETING A year of excellent progress with the formation of several new branches and a satisfactory financial position was disclosed at the annual meeting of the Girls' Friendly Society, held in tlie lodge, Wellesley Street, last night. Archbishop Averill presided. The report of the year's work, read by the organising diocesan secretary, Miss V. de Montalk, stated that besides the ordinary lodge expenses it had been possible to provide several, necessary comforts in the building. The Sunday afternoon teas had been well attended and working girls in the city had taken advantage of the offer of obtaining tea at the lodge at a small cost at mid-day. There had been an average attendance of 13 girls daily during the year.
The annual rally of all branches of the society had been held in St. Mary's School room, there being an excellent attendance. Competitions, for patchwork quilts, flowers and cakes had been well supported by tlie members and candidates of the various classes.
A plentiful supply of flowers, fruit and vegetables had been sent to the lodge by interested friends during the year, the report continued. Various other donations had also been received from members.
Mention was made in the report of the death of the following members, Avho had helped in the building up of the Auckland branch of the society:— Mrs. Hancock, Mrs. Ann Butler, Mrs. Alice Culpan, Mrs. Nairn and Mr. A. E. Upton, ono of the trust board members.
Various financial statements and branch reports were presented, the lodge account and the sick fund report both showing a credit balance. Help for Lonely Girls
In referring to the balanco of the lodge account, Mrs. R. G. Coats, honorary lodge treasurer, paid it was proposed to build a new wing comprising a store room and wood and coal shed.
In moving the adoption of the various reports and balance-sheet, Archbishop Averill congratulated the society on the excellent work being done not only in the main lodgo but by the various branches of the society.
Approval of the Sunday afternoon teas and talk was expressed by the archbishop, who also spoke of his pleasure at the fact that the society was keeping its doors open and offering a friendlv hand to girls outside its own membership. - Ho hoped the _ junior members would go forward with the good work they wore doing and so carry out the principles and ideals of the society. The archbishop paid a tribute to the excellent work carried out by Sliss Hunter, lady superintendent of tho lodge. Reference to the evil influence of the pernicious literature which was being brought into the country wns made by the archbishop, who expressed -the hope that members would do their ■utmost to combat this serious menace.
