FIFTY YEARS AGO

THE CHINESE PROBLEM Although it had been hoped that the Chinese question in Australia 50 years ago would be settled by the conference held in Sydney in July, ISBS, the problem persisted. The following is taken from the New Zealand Herald of September 19, 1888: "The Government of New South Wales will appeal to the Privy Council in the case of the Chinese, Chung Leong Toy, who obtained- damages for injury suffered through being refused permission to land in Australia some time ago. "The London Times, referring to the rejection of the American Treaty by China, attributes the action of the latter "Power in this connection to the high-handed proceedings of the South Wales Government in refusing to allow Chinese to land in that Colony."
