MINISTER DEFENDS SCHEME REPLY TO COUNTY COUNCIL [HY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHANGAREI, Friday \ reply by the Minister of Public AVorks, the Hon. It. Semple, to statements made at .a meeting of the "Whangarci County Council regarding the progress of the "live-vear plan" for backblocks roading was received at a meeting of the council to-day. The Minister stated that the plan was proceeding to schedule, 1006 miles of roads being metalled throughout the Dominion last season.

In answer to complaints by the council over the money voted on tho Public Works Estimates, Mr. Semple stated that the county's expenditure last year was so small as compared with tho amount provided that only £5857 of new money had been voted this year. The chairman, Mr. J. A. S. McKay, pointed out that £20,000 had been voted for the Brvnderwyn deviation, while only £5857 had been voted for 75 roads in the county, one of which was estimated to cost £IO,OOO. This, he said, gave food for thought to backblocks settlers who still found themselves in the mud.
