ENGLISH TROPHY . t CHALLENGE TO OTAGO ACCEPTANCE STILL UNDECIDED The position with regard to Auckland's challenge for the English Trophy was discussed at" last night's meeting of the control board of the Auckland Football Association. A letter received from the New Zealand Council stated that the challenge had been forwarded on to Otago, the new holders, with the request that a suitable dato be' suggested.
Tho chairman, Mr. L. Munro, reported that while on a recent visit to Wellington he had made inquiries regarding the challenge, and it appeared that Otago had a heavy local programme to complete He understood thai there was little prospect of the challenge being accepted this season.
It was decided to play the champion of champions game 011 October :l, and to allocate tho proceeds toward tho insurance fund. In view of the large number of players who have suffered serious injury, it was agreed to ask clubs to givo assistance toward making the fixture a success financially. Tho grounds committee reported that, owing to (he closing of most of the City Council (grounds, it would be necessary for decisions to bo reached in all knock-out games set down for next Saturday. It was pointed out that in somo'of tho grades several games had yet to bo played. It was agreed that extra time, ten minutes each way, and a turther five minutes each way if necessary, should be played in all grades under third intermediate. It was decided that .the higher grades should play •35 minutes each way. Tho fixtures committee reported that, owing to the shortage of grounds, it had made appointments for several games to commence at times other than those usually set down. This action was confirmed by the board. The position of the third senior division was discussed, and, owing to the shortage of grounds, it was agreed not to proceed with the miniature round. It was resolved to present tho medals won by tho Navy side, which defeated Auckland in the Drummond Cup competition, at Blandford Park next Saturday. • A letter of thanks was received from the New Zealand IJugby Union• relative to the congratulations forwarded by the board on the success of tho New Zealand side in Australia. It was agreed to forward a letter of congratulation to tho North Shore Club on its success in the first division championship. The. followinfi transfers were approved:— A. Brass, Onchunga to Thistle; It. J. Morns, Abels to Onehungra.
NEW ZEALAND BOYS DEFEAT OF CESSNOCK FIVE GOALS TO ONE (Received September 7, T.l'2 p.m.) SYDNEY, 1 Sept. 7 Tho New Zealand schoolboy Soccer team to-day defeated Cessnock at Newcastle by •> goals to 1 in dull, showery weather. Irwin opened the visitors' account soon after the start and the Dominion held this advantage until the interval. Scoring threo goals in quick succession in the second half Yeouians displayed wonderful knowledge of the game. He added a fourth goal right on full time. Cessnock repeatedly attacked, but Mtinro s efforts in goal were brilliant and he made nianv outstanding saves. Play was not confined to one particular goal mouth, end io end play giving both sides frequent opportunities'to score. , The visitors have every reason to be proud of their success in defeating the cream of (ho players who virtually comprise tlio nursery of this code in Australia.
