BROTHERS' MEETING
FIRST TIME IN LIVES SOUTH AFRICAN VETERAN ARRIVAL ON HOLIDAY TOUR [by TELEGRAPH —rPRESS association] WELLINGTON, "Wednesday When the Maunganui arrived from Sydney to-day, two brothers who had nevsr previously met made each other's acquaintance. They were Dr. Alan Tennent, of Wellington, and Mr. L. C. Tennent, of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanganyika, who .38 years ago left with the first contingent for the South African War and did not return to New Zealand. Dr. Tennent was born after his departure. In an interview, Mr. L. C. Tennent said that reports of German agitation, so far as Tanganyika was concerned, were definitely exaggerated. On the whole, a very happy feeling existed between Ihe German and British settlers, although it was true that all Germans Ave re compelled to register and were, to some extent, subject to dictation from outside sources.
South Africa was still a country of opportunity, particularly for the right type of man, Mr. Tennent added. Dutch influence in politics was very marked, chiefly because many British settlers were too busy with other concerns to take an active part in politics. Some aspects of the situation were a little unfortunate, but on the whole the Dutch element did not abuse its power.
Mr. Tennent, who is secretary of a shipping company -carrying on the majority of the lightering trade at Dar-es-Salaam, is on six months' furlough, but, as approximately four months will be taken np in travelling, he will bo able to spend only six to eight weeks in New Zealand. Other members of the family are Mr. H. J). Tennent, of Dunedin; Mr. H. C. Tennent, of Honolulu; Mr. K. B. Tennent, of Auckland; Mrs. Olphert, of Hutt; and Mrs. Branson, of Te Araroa.
