CONTEST ON MONDAY
CALTAUX TO MEET DOWNS RETURN MATCH ARRANGED Vie. Caltaux, Auckland's popular welter-weight, whose rapid rise in the professional ranks has delighted his supporters, will feature in a professional I contest of ten three-minute rounds at j the Town Hall on Monday night. In I selecting Barney Downs as his opponent | the local association was largely guided | by the excellent reports of the great : tight put up by this pair at their first meeting at invereargill early last month. The bout was particularly hard and keen and the points verdict in Downs' favour met with a hostile reception , from the enthusiastic; audience. Although at a disadvantage in weight, height and reach, Caltaux proved a real | crowd pleaser by attacking and making I it the liveliest bout seen in Invereargill j for a long time. Both are hard, determined punchers and are prepared to take punishment to get at close range. This return bout is one of the best professional contests available in New Zealand and the Auckland Association is making every effort to make the whole programme an outstanding success. Downs is quietly confident and is in first-class fighting condition, while Caltaux has undoubtedly benefited from the experience j gained on bis southern tour and lie is j extremely eager to avenge his Invereargill defeat. A first-class amateur programme has been selected and should provide excellent preliminary entertainment to the main bout of the evening. Caltaux's reputation has been considerably enhanced by his performances in the South Island and various associations are busy negotiating for his services. He meets Don Johnston at Hamilton on Monday week and he has been approached by both the Dunedin and Christchurch Associations with the offer of bouts during the next month. Other local fighters who are training hard are Hob Moraghan and Brian McKay. Moraghan meets P. Hanhatn at West port on Saturday night when tho West port Association is arranging for a gala evening's entertainment. Although knocked out by Davis at Hamilton last week, Moraghan appeared to be fighting well and is confident that he will give a good account of himself in the south. Young Gildo meets Henry Dunn at Wanganui to-morrow ifight and there is every likelihood that he will be seen at the' Town Hall at the end of this month, probably opposed to Billy Aitken. The presentation of blazers to the Auckland representatives at the New Zealand championships at Gisborne this month will take place at the Town Hall next Monday night. The blazers, which arc in the association's colours, each bear a specially designed badge and the whole effect is'said to justify the efforts of the committee to provide a really smart uniform for the team.
