INSTITUTE AFFAIRS
Ohakune. —The president, Mrs. Carinirje, presided at the monthly meeting and announced her resignation. Mrs. Hardie was elected to fill her position. Mrs. Hardie reported upon the Dominion conference, and on behalf of the members presented Mrs. Carmine with several parting gifts. The results of the competitions were as follows: —Date scones: Mrs. Hardie, 1; Miss G. Hammond, 2. Worked apron: Mrs. King, I; Mrs. Wyman, 2; Mrs. Marshall, .3. Afternoon tea was served. Paparoa. —Mrs. Hay presided at the monthly meeting. Addresses were given by Mrs. T. Wilson, Miss T. W. Wright, Miss Nora Arvill, and Mr. W. A. B. Cole. Miss Mary Jenkins played a piano solo, and Mrs.* M. N. Skelton demonstrated the making of button-holes. A bring-and-buy stall was well patronised. Competitions were won by Mrs. \\ . J. Mcßreen and Mrs. G. Dodds. The hostesses were Mrs. Dallas and Miss X*. Arvill. Institute members joined with tho school children in planting trees in the school grounds on Arbour Day. Mrs. A. H. Tibbetts gave several trees. Lichfield. —Mrs. Burgess gave a report of the Dominion conference proceedings. Mr. J. Hamilton demonstrated life-saving and also gave firstaid hints. The competition \\;as won by Mrs. Ranger, with Mrs. Pepperill second. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Hamilton and Mrs. Young. Mrs. Hanger presided. Auckland Centre. —Mrs. Neal presided at the monthly meeting. The.following programme was presented by members of the .New Women's Club: Songs by Miss Sharp, violin solo by Miss Hilary Kecles, and a play by the drama circle. Mrs. Teed demonstrated pine-needle work and the making of shell flowers, and Mrs. Brady demonstrated moccasin making and paperwork to the junior circle. A bridge afternoon in aid of the room fund was also held. Hobsonville.—At the. monthly meeting Mrs. W. Oekleston cave a demonstration of the making of biscuits on a primus stove. An article on the Chelsea llower show was rend. The flower competition was won by Mrs. Shaw, with Miss Morrison second.
Maramarua-Kopaku.—A community day was held recently, at which items were given by Mrs. F. Downie, Mrs. S. Holloway and Miss F. Holloway. The competition was won by Mrs. G. Stunell. New members welcomed were Mrs. J. Mabee, -Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Larsen. Birkdale. —At the monthly meeting of (lie Birkdalo institute Mrs. Anderson gave a talk 011 diet and demonstrated Teneriffe work, Mrs. Booker won the competition. The hostesses were Mrs. Castleton and Mrs. Dixon. Hiknai.—A social afternoon was held recently to farewell Mrs. Niceol and Miss Margery Niceol. On behalf of the members, the president presented Mrs. Niceol with a silver tea-strainer and stand, and Miss Niceol with a silver vanity case, both gifts being embossed'.with the institute badge. During the afternoon several items were given. At the monthly meeting, the president, Mrs. Silcoek, gave a report 011 the Dominion conference.
