TOLL OF TYPHOON
THE JAPANESE DISASTER DEATH ROLL OF 30 13,000 HOMELESS IN TOKIO TOKIO. Sept. 1 The death roll of the typhoon which wrought havoc throughout eastern Japan yesterday is 30. It is impossible to estimate the damage. The typhoon, which occurred on the anniversary of the 1923 earthquake, swept away bridges, shipping, and wireless • masts, in addition to houses.
In the Tokio area three bridges were demolished and 10 deaths are reported. There are nearly 13,000 homeless in the city. They are sheltering in improvised camps. Tens of thousands of workers are unable to reach the city. Eleven hundred houses collapsed in Tokio, 4174 were damaged and 86,000 were flooded. In Yokohama 417 houses collapsed, 3222 were damaged and 4644 were flooded. i COLLISION IN HARBOUR LINER'S MOORINGS BREAK British Wireless RUGBY, Sept. 1 The P. and O. 15,000-ton liner Chitral broke loose from her moorings at Yokohama during the typhoon and crashed against another ship. The liner was slightly damaged. She subsequently remoored and is carrying out her ordinary schedule.
