Shrubs to Prune Now

Slirjibs which require pruning now are late flowering kinds, which produce flowers on wood made in the current season. -The green shoots on which the yellow flowers of the winter-flowering jasmine were borne have not done their work, and after tying in those which may be necessary to fill in gaps, shorten the remainder to about one or two inches. This will encourage the development of shoots which will bloom next ■winter. Buddleia variabilis, Hydrangea paniculata, the white summer flowerjasmine, Ceanothus azureus, and some of the shrubby spiraeas all require attention. All growths which flowered last year should be shortened back to two buds, while the long shoots made from the spurs of wistaria should be pruned back to three buds. Any growths required to extend the plant should be shortened only one-third.
