DEFENCES OF HANKOW NEW JAPANESE OFFENSIVE FULL FORCE OF ARMY STRUGGLE ON WIDE FRONT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August .'sl, 11.55 p.m.) LONDON, August 31 The Japanese announce that they have let loose the full force of their army at four points and made important advances, threatening the collapse of the entire Chinese defences of Hankow. The fronts in the struggle for Hankow cover five provinces. n
The Japanese capture of Fenglingtn, Lilian and Hwoslian is officially admitted. A Chinese and Japanese artillery duel is proceeding at Tungkwan.
The Chinese claim that they are holding their own south of the Yangtse, repulsing with heavy loss Japanese attacks west of Juiehang, also onslaughts at. Shaho and I'ovang, but the Japanese claim that they control the north bank of the yellow Biver for 60 miles, capturing Changwangtsun, threatening Kwangtsi and entering Hupeh Province. Japanese aeroplanes attacked Shiukwan and slightly damaged the railway. They killed manv civilians.
The Japanese have permitted 30 British and American missionaries to resume work in Shantung Province.
