EXPANSION PROPOSALS EXTRA £40,000,000 SOUGHT HUGE FLEET ENVISAGED TOTAL OF 272 FIGHTING SHIPS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright' (Received August 31, G.'IO p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 30 After consulting President Roosevelt, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral William I). Leahy, indicated that the Navy will probably seek an additional appropriation of 200,000,000 dollars (about £40,000,000) from Congress owing to the added cost of implementing the 1,000,000,000-dollar expansion programme.
In an article in the Army and Navy journal, the Secretary for the Navy, Mr. Claude A. Swanson, reveals that the fleet will comprise 272 fighting ships totalling 1,517,480 tons, including 18 battleships, 18 heavy cruisers, 28 light cruisers, eight aircraftcarriers, 144 destroyers and 56 submarines.
