CENSUS OF NATIVES
JOHANNESBURG TOTAL TROUBLE IN FIXING AGES [from our own correspondent] JOHANNESBURG, July 30 A census of the native population of the urban areas of the Union was completed at midnight on July 12 when the name of every native, man, woman and child, resident or employed in the municipal areas was recorded. The only exceptions were mine natives and natives travelling by trains or other vehicles.
It is expected that the census will reveal that, apart from the mines, Johannesburg has a native population of close on 200,000.
Natives had the utmost difficulty in computing their ages, but in this they were assisted by such landmarks in their lives as the South African War, Halley's Comet, tlio great Johannesburg snowstorm of 1910, the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1924, and so on.
