BIG-GAME FISH
WATEES OFF DUKBAN
OPINION OF AN EXPERT
THE NEED FOR EXPLOITATION [most OUR OWN correspondent] DURBAN, July 30 Ac-cording to Mr. B. M. Impey, Principal Fisheries Officer, the waters off Durban provide a fisherman's paradise, but the fishermen do not know it.
In an interview following successes of a big ganio angler from overseas, itr. Impey said: "I am sure that there are big game fish near Durban, and they have only to bo exploited. I should say that there are tunny, marlin and sailfish. A fishing boat from Durban has caught both sailfish and marlin this side of St. Lucia, and last year two tunny were caught right inshore at Durban, one from the pier and the other by seine netters. They both weighed the same —1791b. —which shows that they were going in shoals. Smaller tunny weighing about 701b. have been caught in Cape waters.
"Previously nobody seems to have taken much interest in the possibilities of big-game fishing here. It needs private enterprise to provide a suitable boat for investigating. "The world's record tunny weighed 11001b. To catch fish like that expensive imported tackle is necessary."
