500-MILE CYCLE RACE
BOY SCOUT PROPOSAL RELAY IN BOTH ISLANDS [BY TELEGRAPH —rHKSS ASSOCIATION*] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Plans for a bicycle relay race betweenf the North and South.lslands over 500mile courses extending respectively from Whangarei to Wellington and from Invercargill to Wellington or Blenheim, are being considered by the New Zealand Centennial Boy. Scout Jamboree organisation. The cyclists will bring to Wellington tallies of the numbers of boys to attend the jamboree and the race will officially mark the closing of applications. The suggestion is that the race should be held in July immediately after applications to attend the jamboree hare closed. Hiders will start simultaneously from Whangarei and Invercargill and traverse courses of approximately equal length and difficulty. At points along the route they will be met by other cyclists from outlying districts bringing in further returns. At the boundaries of each scouting district the riders will be relieved by fresh relays. The island to bring its complete returns first will be declared the winner. In the next few weeks a definite scheme for the race will probably be drawn up by scout leaders for consideration by scout headquarters throughout the countrv.
