ELLERSLIE WORK
KELLY DISPLAYS DASH PH ILCOURT MAKES PROGRESS VALSPEAR PERFORMS SOUNDLY HIGH CASTE AND KONNETA Short sprints mainly comprised the fast work at Ellerslie yesterday morning, when among those to impress were l'hileonrt, Kelly, Valspcar and Birthday Boy. The No. 3 grass track was available, and, after the recent rain, the going was holding. After beginning slowly, Palinint (Tonks) was finishing on strongly to complete three furlongs in 40 4-ss. Kelly (Gilchrist) appeared to have a little in hand at the end of a similar distanco in 40s, it was Kelly's first fast work since resuming and his effort was very satisfactory. Wee Pat (Clarke) and Bonnybelle (Tremain) were companions over half a mile in 555, finishing together. Wee Pat worked solidly and should be in good trim for future jumping engagements. Royal Abb (Markwick) was not hurried to run three furlongs in 40 l-ss. The Posterity gelding has settled down a good deal lately and is a nice, even mover.
Glen Abb (Green) finished strong work over a circuit by sprinting the last three furlongs in 42 2-5.5. Kenspecklo (Messervy) was being cased at the end of six furlongs in 1.28 1-5. After running the first furlong in 13s, Paint (Tonks) and Silver Quex (Gilchrist) were travelling comfortably on terms at the end of half a mile in 53 4-ss. Both liavo been working well and look early prospects. Valmint (McGrath) was travelling comfortably throughout to run half a mile in 50 2-5s Hessketoon (.'Jones) had little trouble in accounting for Norse Lady (Fearn) over a similar distanco in 58s, the first furlong taking 14 2-ss.
Tc Maranui (Kerr) strode over five furlongs in 1.9 3-5, tho last half-milo in 55 4-ss.
Ohmaha Goes Freely
. Ohmaha (Cammick) was going easily alongside Piracy (Messervy) and Knightsbridgo (Tremain) at the conclusion of four .furlongs in 5-ls, the first furlong being run in 13 2-ss. Ohmaha is working in his best style and may bo a useful sprinter this season.
There was little between Philcourt (Jones) and Trilliarch (Cameron) at the end of five furlongs jn 1.7 4-5, the last half-mile taking 53 2-ss. Both were doing it well at the end and Philcourt continues to make steady improvement.
The two-vear-olds High Caste (Markwick) and Konneta (Coon) were sprinted two furlongs up tho back, and they did well to record 27 4-ss, for tlicy were not required to do their best. Both aro very big youngsters and they are not being hurried. High Casto is a halfbrother to Stretto.
Marie's Acre (Jones) finished just in front of Jonathan (Cameron), with Gloucester( Fearn) further back, at the end of five furlongs in 1.7 4-5, the last four being run in 54 l-ss. Mario's Acre revealed dash and was doing his work well over the concluding stages. Jonathan tailed off early, but finished in his usual solid manner.
Marhcke (Cammick). was not required to do her best to register 42 4 -5s for three furlongs, iiirthdav Boy (Markwick) appeared to have a little in reserve whilo running three furlongs in 3!) 2-ss. He has come on rapidlv during the last few weeks and looks promising.
After taking 13 4-5s for tho initial furlong, Cheval do Voice (James) was easing up at the finish of half a mile in 56 l-ss. Cheval de Volee is not to fulfil his engagement at New Plymouth this week, but will remain at Ellerslie for tho Avondalo meeting. Dark Legion Sprints
Hunting Maid (Will iams) strode over live furlongs, averaging 15s to the furlong. Tupeotu (Buttcrworth) was under a good hold while sprinting the last three furlongs of his work in 44 l-ss. Armacourt (August) worked easily over five furlongs, to complete the last three in 445. Armacourt looks bright and well.
On the two-year-old track, Dark Legion (Gilchrist) covered two furlongs in 28 3-ss, timo upon which he could have improved. On the sand, Kilonsa (McCurdy) and Land Girl (McTavish) completed two rounds of steady pacing by coming homo the last seven furlongs in 1.41 2-5.
Lady Defoe (MeTnvish) was timed j to run the last thrco furlongs of her work in 42 l-ss. Valspear (Tremnin) hit out with dash over seven furlongs, the last half-mile being run in 53 3-ss. In a bout over four hurdles, Trackman (Nicholson) ontjumped lllimani (Cough) and led throughout. Trackman was responsible for a good display, whilo Illinium's showing was satisfactory. Useful tasks on the sand were performed by Brown Lap, Javola, School Song, Ringshot. Elect-wind, Dutch GirJ, Bright Idea and Tulak. RUGBY AND RACING CLASH OF DATES AT NAPIER The clash oi dates between the Wai-rarapa-Hawke's Bay Rugby match and the second day of the Napier Park Racing Club's winter race meeting was discussed at the annual meeting of the club in Napier. After Mr. J. \V. Norrie, president of the Uawko's Bay Rugby Union, had intimated that his union would spare no effort to work harmoniously with the racing club, it was decided to advise the Owners and Trainers' Association of tho intention to start racing on the King's Birthday at 11 a.m. The president of tho racing club, Mr. C. Louisson, said that in tho past the races had been started 'as early as possible to enable attendance at both fixtures. TROTTING BREVITIES NOTES FROM ALL QUARTERS Grand Mogul is now working at Addington without any signs of lameness and before long he may be able to reproduce his best form. Nervousness at tho barrier lias cost Erancisco a number of winning stakes in her short career, but she was given a good spell, and- her work lately has pointed to her being improved, says a Christchuroh exchange. Tho Sonth Australian Trotting Clnb, which races at Wayvillo, experienced a slight falling-off in attendances during the last 12 months, but a profit of £8361 was made. Totalisator revenue increased by £43,680 to £310,025, while the bookmakers held approximately £425,000.
An excess of £10,096 in tho value of Assets over liabilities was shown in the balance-sheet of the Ashburton Trotting Club presented at the annual meeting on Monday. The year's operations elided with a credit of £IB7B. Stakes totalled £9060 and totalisator proceeds were £10,714.
