NORTHUMBERLAND TITLES MALFROY'S TRIPLE SUCCESS [I'KOM OUR OWN (.'OHKKSPOXT)F.NT] LONDON, August 3 Last year C. K. Malfroy lost the Northumberland lawn tennis tournament, played at Newcastle, to C. R. D. Tuckey. Last Saturday he regained it, defeating D. W. Butler in two sets, 11 —9, ti —1. The lawn tennis correspondent of the Sunday Dispatch expresses the opinion that when Malfroy is in form there are few better players in the kingdom. On Saturday lie had to contend with his own physical condition as well as Butler, whoso chief merits were a superb fitness, fleetness of foot, and a stout heart.
"Malfroy," says the critic, "provided the better strokes, having delicacy of touch as well as firmness." This was the fourth time that Malfroy and Butler had met, the former having previously won twice and the latter once. The all-Davis Cup men's doubles final between Malrroy and G. P. Hughes against A. M. Hamburger and 1). W. Butler, like the singles, produced a good first, but a disappointing second set. Malfroy and Hughes won, 10 —8, 6 —2. Malfroy won the cup given for this event outright last year when partnered by A. 0. Stedman.
Malfroy with Miss Heelcv also retained the mixed doubles for the fourth year. This was the best match of the day. In the semi-final round they defeated D. W. Butler and Miss P. A. O'Connell, 3—6, 6 —3, 7 —5. In tho final they had a victory oTer G. P. Hughes and Miss J. Nicoll, 6—4, 2—6, 6—4.
