ASSAULT CHARGE
MAORI SENT TO GAOL 21 DAYS' IMPRISONMENT [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday A plea of not guilty was entered by Moko Brown, a Maori, of 'lauranga, in the Police Court, before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., to-day, to a charge of assaulting a young woman, Doris Merle Williams, at Hamilton on August 21.
Doris Merle Williams stated that when she was walking along C'ollingwood Street at about 7.30 p.m. on August 21 she heard someone run up behind he: 1 . She felt accused put his arm around her shoulder and try to twist her head back. She screamed and her assailant hesitated before making a second attack. When witness screamed again, however, he ran off into the darkness along Alexandra Street.
In reply to a question by SeniorSergeant G. H. Lambert, witness said that accused had made an attempt to take her purse. Peter Harrison, car salesman, of Hamilton, said ho heard a woman scream. He pursued accused in his ear and he and a constable were successful in detaining accused. Accused was convicted and sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment.
