TOTAL REACHES 281,877

dominion figures rising OVER 10 PER CENT IN YEAR An increase of 27,380, or 10.8 per cent, is shown in the. number of radio licences in force in the Dominion at July 31, compared with the total at the same date last year. According to the monthly statement issued by the Post and Telegraph Department, effective licences issued on July 31 this year totalled 281,877. Private receiving sets, which totalled 251,764 at July 31, 1937, again make up the greatest part of the increase. Wellington district, with 99,738 licences issued at the end of July, has the highest number of private receivers, the Auckland figure standing at 87,044, Canterbury at 53,002 and Otago a-t 38,980. Since last year the number of free licences issued has increased from 705 to 863, while the corresponding figures for amateur experimental sets are 968 and 1017. In the Auckland district at July 31 the numbers of licences issued under various headings were: —Receivers, 87,044; dealers, 436; experimental, amateur, 273; multiple, 2; special, 3; free, 283; broadcasting, 1.
