GREAT NORTH ROAD
IMPROVEMENT SCHEME i i WIDENING TRAFFIC WAY PUBLIC WORKS UNDERTAKING Tho widening of the traffic way of the Great North Road from the Whau Bridge to tho outer boundary of the Henderson town district is to bo carried out under a special scheme undertaken by tho Public Works Department to provide employment. The work, which is expected to take several months to complete, was started at the beginning of this month. Tho expenditure of some thousands of pounds will be necessary. Tho concrete surface of this Stato highway has a width of 18ft., and it is intended to increase the width by metalling for at least 4ft. on each side of the concrete. It is estimated that this will add probably 50 per cent to tha carrying capacity of the road, and will greatly improve tho facilities for passing. In places where shoulders have already been formed alongside tho concrete they will not bo disturbed. Blue metal for the work is being obtained by tho department from the stone deposits on an area of Crown property near the Zoological Park. About 50 men are at present engaged, and these will bo replaced or added to when necessary by the Labour Department.
Tho road, which was originally constructed as a result of tho initiative of tho Auckland City Council, passes through tho territories of tho New Lynn Borough Council, the Waitemata County Council, and the Glen Eden and Henderson Town Boards. Where footpaths havo been formed, and tho road is kerbed and channelled, the surface improvements will bo carried out to tho full width of tho roadway.
