OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION at rotorua QUALIFYING ROUNDS PLAYED GLADING LEADS THE FIELD [BY TKLKGRAPH —OWN COHHKSrONDKXT] ROTORUA. Tuesday With a list of 90 entrants, including several of the most prominent players in the Dominion, good golf was witnessed when the two qualifying rounds of the Rotorua Golf Club's annual open championship and Thermal Cup tournament were played at Arikikapakapa today, The conditions were ideal for qualifying play, and the greens and fairways were in better order than for any previous tournament, with a good tun of the ball, considering the heavy rain experienced during the past few weeks.

H. D. Brinsden, who is defending the open ch.ampions.hip title, repeated his performance in a practice round yesterday, to return a gross 68 during tlie morjiing round, this being the best card of €he day. In the second round, however., he experienced trouble on the greens, and returned 74. An impressive exhibition of steady golf was given by the young Hamilton player, R. H. Glading. who. with Brinsden and 1). G. W byte, of "Wellington, is one of the three scratch men entered in the tournament. Playing a very straight ball from tee to green, with good approach shots. Glading was the most impressive of the scratch players and, by returning two consistent cards of 70 and 71, he' was the first to qualify for the championship series, being one stroke better .than Brinsdcn.

Whyte gave a disappointing display, and the best he could do was to qualify twenty-fourth, with a gross card of 104. Although he made several mistakes on the green, J. P. Mortland, the young Taihape player, who performed so well at the tournament two seasons ago, qualified third, with L. li. Haworth, Cambridge, who played two very steady rounds.

The veteran Aucklander, H. B. Lnsk, a previous holder of both the open and New Zealand Veterans' Cup championships, was fifth, while W. Kusabs, runner-up for the championship last year, had to be content with twentieth position. 11. D. Wright, of Auckland, crashed badly when he returned 85- in the morning and, although he improved with a 78 in the afternoon, he was fortunate to secure second to last position in the ThcnriaLCup qualifiers. Match play will commence to-morrow morning, the finals being reached on Friday. Jiesiilts were: —
