SHOOTING BROADCAST
MAN RUNS AMOK SIX PEOPLE WOUNDED POLICE SERVICE BROKEN UP (Received August 15, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 14 Thousands of people who were listening in to a broadcast description of a police memorial service in Central Park ivere startled to hear shots and screams. The programme was broken off and a voice shouted into the microphone: "Get an ambulance quick." It transpired that Charles Sanfillipi, infuriated by receiving two summonses for alleged traffic offences, had armed himself with two shotguns, filled his pockets with cartridges and opened firo during the reading of a list of the honoured dead of the police force. Ho wounded threo policemen and three civilians before he was killed by volleys from police revolvers. It was discovered that Sanfillipi was wearing metal plates on his breast and back. Scores of people were endangered during a ivild eight-minute fight with the police. As lie .ay writhing on the ground, the dying man muttered: "I intended firing until I killed as many policemen as I could and I did, I did." The wounded include Lieutenant James McDonnell, who has the most decorations of any policeman in New York.
