COMMODORE RETIRES
SIR CHARLES MATHESON ORIENT LINE SERVICE Commodore Sir Charles Matheson, D.5.0., R.D., R.N.P., commodore of the Orient Line fleet since 1933, retired at the end of last month after a maritime career of nearly 50 years. Sir Charles visited Auckland several times on Orient ships, the last occasion being on the Oronsay on a cruise in February.
In 1903 lie first joined the company and served continuously until 1914 when he was called up for service with the Royal Navy. In 1916 he was mentioned in despatches and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. Early in 1917 Sir Charles was appointed to the command of a decoy ship and, after a short service, engaged and sank an enemy submarine. In June, 1918, he was promoted Acting-Com-mander R.N.R., and for his war services he was awarded the D.S.O. After the war Sir Charles took over command of the Orontes and subsequently commanded the Orvieto, Orsova, Ormonde, Orama and Oronsay. In December, 1925, he was promoted to £he rank of Captain R.N.R., and in 1934 to Commodore R.N.R., being the only member of the reserve Voyaging east of Suez claiming the rank. He was appointed A.D.C. to the King in 1931 and a knighthood was bestowed upon him in the Coronation Honours last year.
