LEADING TRAINERS TIE FOR FIRST PLACE T. GEORGE AND F. ROBERTS R. S. BAGBY'S TWENTY WINNERS There 'is a tie for training honours for the racing season 1937-38, T. R. George, Trentham, and F. Roberts, Riccarton, each having trained 28 winners. Closely following them are L. G. Morris, Awapuni, with 27, and H. S. Greene, Grecnmeadows, with 25. This is the fifth occasion 011 which George has been leading trainer in the last seven seasons, but the performance of Roberts is unique, as this is the first season in which he has held a trainer's licence, and it was not applied for until after tho Grand National meeting was held in the beginning of the season. Roberts was head lad to Mr. J. S. Shaw at tha time, the-latter accepted a position a!s stipendiary steward to tho Trotting .Conference. Tho good jumper, Royal Mimic, bled badly when contesting tho Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at the Poverty Bay meeting.
Ji. Lewis, who retired from race-rid-ing last season, has been granted a jockey's badge by tho committee of tho Victoria Racing Club in recognition of his long association with racing.
The Ellerslie candidates Professional and Hessketoon will not be meeting very strong company at the Poverty Hunt Club's meeting to-day and both are in the rjght condition to race up to their best.
Rapa Waiata made a good showing in his first attempts over country at the Poverty Bay meeting last week. On the first day he was second to Good Hunting and on the second occasion lie won. He jumps well and stays on.
Although A. E. Didhani holds both a trainer's and jockey's licence, under tho Rules of Pacing, ho cannot rido either of his candidates, Alma or Araboa, in tho Winter Cup. The rule states that no trainer who has two Jiorwes engaged in a race can rido ,in that race.
Marjory Daw lias been sold to Mr. M. Grogan as a brood mare. She is a well-proportioned daughter of Chief Ruler nnd Doree, is sister to Princess Dorecn. and granddaughter of D'Oro, sister to Desert Gold. Marjory Daw is closely related to the speedy Coronilla, "who is by Chief Ruler from D'Oro.
Kinsfolk, tho five-year-old daughter of Posterity nnd Episode, who cost 275 guineas as a yearling, Fidelity, a four-vear-old daughter of Constant Hon from Wolverine and Siren, tho four-year-old daughter of Salmagundi— Valienre, are to join the Kia Ora Stutl for tho coining season, but their mates had not been decided upon.
When contesting the To Hapara Hack Steeplechase at the Poverty Bay meeting, Good Hunting was forced into an error by a horso who swerved in front of him. Tho brush fence into which he blundered had a very wide base, which in tipping up caught tho horso in the barrel, throwing his hindquarters into tho air nnd causing him to describe a full somersault. Neither horse nor rider was injured.
