A GREAT DREAMER

HUNDRED years ago there arrived in Australia one of the great pioneers of Sydnoy, Thomas Sutcliffe Mort.

He was a man of vision, and sheep and cattle breeders all over the world owe him a debt of gratitude, for it was he who first encouraged the frozen-moat industry. He put £BO,OOO into a venture to oxport frozen moat from Australia to the Motherland, but the scheme Unfortunately failed owing to ft technical defect in tho machinery's design. 'Fifties, when gold was discovered, he formed the first gold-mining company, and later he bought land and developed a dairying district. Then Mort and Company became interested in silk, cotton, and sugar industries, and in tho 'sixties he began to -think of shippine. Ho built docks and engineering works which still bear his name and aro well known in Sydney Harbour, and from his dock tho first big steamer built in the State was launched. To-day his statuo stands in Macquarie Place near tho vast buildings of the company. So esteemed was he that the working mon of Sydney resolved to erect another memorial to him, declaring him "tho greatest benefactor tho working classes in Australia ever had."
