ELLERSLIE RELIEF WORKS
Sir, —Regarding a statement that appeared in the Herald of the 4th inst., made by Mr. A. H. Mclntyre, of the Ellerslie Borough Council, which was a definite charge against the workers employed by that council under No. 13 scheme. On behalf of the workers I wish to enter an emphatic denial of the statement repeated by Mr. Mclntyre that men were loafing on the job. 1 would ask Mr. Mclntyre if he has definite complaints of such loafing, or is merely repeating comment. On behalf of the men woiking ill Miller Street, I wish to say that we realise and appreciate what tho Government has done and is trying to do to allow us to earn a living, and that we are as ready and willing to work as any body of men engaged by this or any other council. As Mr. Shiels pointed out, any apparent stopping of work is due to a cause that is beyond our control, and for which wo are in no way responsible. One of Them.
