RUGBY FOOTBALL

PLAYERS ORDERED OFF CAUTIONS ADMINISTERED INCIDENTS AT SHOW GROUND SELECTION OF MAORI TEAM The ordering off of five players in the senior match between Manukau and Technical Old Boys at the Show Grounds on Saturday last was the subject of a report received by the Auckland Rugby Union from its judicial committee last night. 'lho five pla.yeis were H. Montgomery, V. Cleave, and P. Rei, of Technical, and H. Way and B. H. Birtwhistle, of Manukau. The referee, Mr. G. Peace, stated in his report that the gaiuo after half-time became very haul anil willing, with tempers frayeu, and it was necessary to call together the forwards of both teams and issue a strict and final warning that no further rough play would be tolerated. Shortly afterward Cleave Wav and Kei were seen to tie wrestling air a line-out and all were sent off. lhis n.io a sobering effect for a time, but later lit saw Montgomery and Birtwlustle wrestling, and, when they failed to break, they wen sent off. Mr. L'eace said that no great vieiousness was displayed. The judicial committee reported that three of the four players, in addition to the rcfcrco, had appeared before it, while Birtwhistle had written stating that, us lie would be out of town on business, he could not appear. He mentioned that there was no animosity between him and Montgomery, the latter beintf a personal friend of his. The explanations of the three players who appeared were that they were merely wrestling in an endeavour to (jet possession ol the ball. All denied, striking; any deliberate blows. . The judicial committee said its conclusion was that, whilo play was unduly willing tliero was nothing deliberate or vicious, and it recommended that the players be cautioned.

A Member: llear, hear. The .judicial committee also recommended that the two clubs concerned he asked to co-operate with the union with a view to prevonting any recurrence of such incidents. The judicial committee's recommendations were confirmed, the chairman, Mr. A. Raker, commenting that the whole thing was "not as bad as had at first appeared. Maori Secretary's Complaint A letter was received from Mr. L. Parore, of Dargaville, secretary of the Tokeraii Rugby Football Advisory Hoard, complaining strongly of the methods followed in selecting the New Zealand Maori team for Fiji, lie considered there should have been an A and B trial match at Wanganui before the team was selected, and that, in the absence of such a match, players were chosen more on reputation than on current form.

Mr. I'arore considered that R. White, of North Auckland, had been "jockeyed out" of the team because of an unfounded report (lint his knee was not sound, whereas he had proved his fitness and ability in the Maori trial match at Whangarei. and again in the match Auckland versus North Auckland. He also criticised the omission of W. Cooper, of North Auckland, and considered that the Auckland players, Donaldson, Rc.i, Johnston and Davis, should have had an opportunity to play before all the selectors. "Considering the large population of the Auckland Province," ho concluded, "I beg to suggest the advisability of pressure being brought to bear to urge recognition of tho rights of our players." The letter was referred to the union's match committee to bring down a report on tho points raised by Itfr. Parore. ft was stated that the Maori team to visit Fiji would arrive at Auckland on Monday next by the limited express, and would leavo by the Niagara on Tuesday for Fiji. It would bo under the managership of Mr. S. 8. Dean. Absence of Referees

A letter was received from the Manukau Club stating that referees for three' recent lower grade matches had failed to appear. It was stated that in one case the referee's car had broken down, and in tho other two the referees had called the games off because of the condition of the grounds. It was decided that Mr. Sweeney should take the matter up with the Referees' Association. A report was received from the grounds committee concerning tho condition of tho Western Springs Stadium. It was stated that the ground was several inches deep in mud over practically the whole area, and definitely unfit for use. The committee's recommendation, that no further matches be arranged for that ground until the weather had improved, and the ground dried out, was endorsed.

The Marist Club was granted permission to travel to Morrinsville on Saturday, and Grammar Old Boys to Whangarei. The Manukau Club was granted permission to play the Mataura (Waihi) senior team at Onehungp on Saturday afternoon, and permission was granted the College Rifles seniors and juniors to visit Whanjcarei on August 20. Tho Grafton senior team will travel to Onewhero next Saturday to play the Franklin Sub-union representatives. The inability of H.MIS. Leander's team to fulfil engagements in the senior reserve grade, owing to her. cruising schedule, was discussed. It was decided to play the fourth round, starting on August 20, between the five remaining teams, and to notify the clubs accordingly.^, Tho reinstatement of C. J. Toon and K. A. Strango was approved by tho New Zealand ltugby Union. Messrs. A. B. Ohlson and H. McDonald were appointed ground officials for Eden Park on Saturday.
