DROWNING TRAGEDY
FUNERAL OF VICTIMS SERVICE IN ST. MATTHEW'S Hundreds of people took part in the funeral service held in St.- Matthew's Church yesterday for tlie victims of Wednesday's drowning tragedy, Mrs. Vera Lawson and her three young chili dren, Joan. Gladys and Peter. The Anglican burial office was read by the Rev. G. R. Monteith, vicar of St. Barnabas' Church. I Mount Eden, who chose in place of the usual lesson the passage Mark, telling how children were brought to Christ, 'and ending: " Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not. forof such is the kingdom of God." The hymn " Abide With Me " was sung, and after prayers the four white coffins, covered with flowers, were carried out to two hearses by relatives and workmates of the bereaved father, Mr. H. J. Lawson. The funeral was watched by a large gathering, and traffic stopped as it moved up Hobs'on Street, many people standing with bared heads as it passed. Mr. Monteith conducted the service of committal at the Waikumete crematorium.
