Moody in the Supreme Court yesterday, w hen explain- : ing to Mr. .Justice Fair the cause of I the downfall of Frederick Harold Hose. ! a clerk, 51 years <»f age. Rose had I pleaded guilty to L'l charges of thelt from his employers, and came before i Mr. Justice Fair for sentence. -Mr. M oody said that Rose was a j widower with two children and an aged I mother partly dependent on him. Gam- I hling was the whole cause of the trouble, j Ho had hitherto borne a good character and had been a good husband, a good father and a good son. Counsel protested against the delays which had resulted j in Rose waiting for sentence for 26 i days. I His Honor said the offences extended j over more than two years and the man i knew what he was doing. It was always ; painful to have to sentence a man of j middle age who had lived a respectable j life and brought up a family. He took | into account the other penalties that | would fall upon him. hut the least sen- I teiiec that lie could impose would bo ; one of two years' imprisonment.
At the request, of .Mr. \ . IJ. Meredith. the Crown Prosecutor, His Honor made a formal order for the return of £1") found in the accused's possesion. Mr. M oody said he understood this had already been handed over.
