INCIDENT IN HOCKEY "Hockey" (Dargaville) writes. —In a ladies' match a ball hit by a forward outside the circle glanced off the stick of a defender into the goal. Was the decision of the umpiro, a penalty corner, correct or should a goal have been awarded'i —The rules in question state that "A goal is scored when the ball bus passed entirely over the goal line under the bar, the ball, while within the striking circle, having been hit bv or glanced off the stick of an attacker. ' Thus as the ball was hit from outside the circle no goal could have been scored. Also, the rules state: "If the brtll glances off or is. in the umpire's opinion, unintentionally sent behind the . goal line by any player of the defending team behind the 25 yards line, the umpire shall give a corner to the attacking team." If the ball was sent over the goal line accidentally, not a P«nilty corner but a corner should wi been awarded.—Athletics Editor.
