ST. JAMES' THEATRE Robert Taylor has a different kind of role as an American at Oxford in " The Yank at Oxford," which will continue an extended season at St. James' Theatre to-day. The film contains some beautiful scenes of the University town,, and is the first to have been made by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer company in an English setting. Maureen O'Sullivan also appears. MAJESTIC THEATRE A double-feature programme, comprising the thrilling film, "Tip-off Girls" and "Oassidy of Bar 20." which is to be shown at the Majestic Theatre to-day, offers excellent entertainment. The first * attraction deals with an attempt by American G-Men to discover the identity of a gang which is holding up and looting lorries as they pass along the main highways. " C'assidy of Bar 20," adapted from the' novel by Clarence Mulford,' is an exciting Western drama which tells of the activities of rustlers operating in Arizona, who are intimidating- the ranchers to give up their holdings. CIVIC THEATRE The French actress Annabella gives a delightful performance in the comedy " The Baroness and the Butler," which heads the programme to be shown at the Civic .Theatre to-day. She is cast as the baroness, while the part of the butler in the film is taken by William Powell, who demonstrates that he is fully capable in the lightest of comedy roles. The story of the old family servant who succeeds his master as the Prime Minister is handled by the main players with deftness and despatch, and in the role of the baroness' father Henry Stephenson gives another good performance. An entertaining series of short features also is being shown. REGENT THEATRE. With an outstanding cast and leading parts taken by Warren William, Virginia Bruce and Melvyn Douglas the mystery picture " Arsene Lupin Returns" continues a successful season at the Regeilt Theatre to-day. Based on the famous character of French detective fiction the screen play is a fastmoving adventure drama that provides excellent entertainment. An attempt to steal the beautiful De Grissac emerald brings about two murders, blame for which is cast upon Arsene Lupin, formerly thought by the police to be dead. The love interest is provided by Virginia Bruce, Melvyn Douglas and Warren William in a love triangle. Tho supporting programme is an outstanding one.

STRAND THEATRE With. Irene Dunne and Douglas Fairbanks, jun., prominently cast, "The Joy of Living" is to be shown at the Strand Theatre to-day. Brilliant acting and witty dialogue combine to make this one of the best comedies seen in Auckland for some time. Miss Dunne is portrayed as a famous New York singer who falls in love with the owner of an island in the tropics, played by Fairbanks. The girl does not wish to leave the ease of luxury of city life and the island dweller attempts to convince her of his philosophy of simple life. The strong supporting cast includes Alice Brady, Guy Kibbee and Eric Blore. The associated programme includes an amusing Walt Disney Silly Symphony, ''The Moth and the Flame." EMBASSY THEATRE A grim portrayal of slum life is given in a brilliant screen-plav "Dead End," showing at the Embassy Theatre today. The principal roles are taken by Joel McCrea-and Sylvia Sidney, who are supported by a powerful cast. The story centres about the children of Dead End, the slum area which comprises New York's waterfront, where houses of the poor are adjacent to. apartment houses of the wealthy. Children bred in this atmosphere qnicklv learn the ways of their maiiv of 'whom are gunmen; and thugs, beating up other children and committing petty crimes. An unusual romance runs through this outstanding picture.

PRINCE EDWARD THEATRE Good entertainment is provided by "Topper," the comedy to be shown at the Prince Edward Theatre to-day. The second attraction is the tense drama, "Madame X," in which are prominently cast Gladys George and Warren William »

BERKELEY, MISSION BAY The hilarious English comedy "Over She Goes'' is. to be presented at the Berkeley Theatre, Mission Bay, tonight. The prominent comedian, Stanley Lupino, takes a leading role. TUDOR CINEMA The excellent comedy, "Mr. Dodd Takes the Air," is to be shown at the Tudor Cinema to-day. The supporting programme includes the latest of the "March .of Time" series.
