MODEL OF MOTOR-SHIP

THE ESSEX IN MINIATURE Built accurately to scale, a podel of the Federal Line's motor-ship Essex is being made by the ship's -carpenter of the Cumberland, which is now in Auckland. The model, which is 3ft. in length with a beam of 4sin. and a depth of 3Jin., was started three weeks ago and so far the hull and r _ most of the superstructure have been completed. The builder hopes that the rigging, which is the most intricate part of the work, will be completed by the time the Cumberland reaches England. In building the hull each plank was laid in position and the whole dampen together before being cut to shape Teak was used for this part, of th« work. The superstructure has beenmadi in block form, and covered with stir, glossy paper. Each piece is removable The accommodation ladders are mafli of wood, with the sides glued in posi tion.

Smaller details have been as accur ately constructed as the hull. The car rels of the numerous winches are madi from air-gun slugs, the same materials cut to the required size, providing pulleys for the derricks. The whole model rests on two polished stands made from brass door-knobs. , The rails of the boat have yet to be made. For these, three threads of silk and one of cotton will be used, while the stanchions will be made of small pins.
