LIFE IN SZECHWAN
CHINA'S REMOTE PROVINCE
PERFECT NATURAL FORTRESS Life in Szechwan, the largest and most densely populated province in China, was described by the Rev. C. J. Fatchett, of the China Inland Mission, at a luncheon party held by the Auckland Women's Luncheon Club in the Milne and Choyce Reception Hall yesterday. The president, Mrs. J. Gulliver, welcomed the guests and introduced Miss Peggi Cruickshank, who gave an amusing sketch, "An Australian's Impressions of New Zealand." Mr. Patchett said that the only entrance to Szechwan, which was entirely surrounded by mountain ranges, was through the gorges of the Yangtse Kiang River. At any time, navigation ■was dangerous, for the river ran very swiftly, and the boats had to attain an even higher speed to pass safely through the narrow, steep-banked passes and the whirlpools. 1 litis the province was a natural fortress, and was being transformed into a military centre.
