POST OFFICE EXTENSION THE SITE BEING CLEARED PLAN FOR THE FOUNDATIONS The demolition of the old railway station buildings at the back of the Chief Post Office is now in progress preparatory to the erection of tho large building •which is to be used by tho department chiefly for mail purposes. The contractor, 3lr. R. A. Cornish, will soon 6tart work on the foundations, which will b© unuaizal in character, in view of the nature of the ground, which is a reclaimed area. Excavations will be made for 6ft. only, and from the new level an enclosing interlocked steel fence will be driven for 36ft. The necessary sheet piling comprising 200 tons of steel has just been shipped from England. The excavated portion will be filled by a reinforced concrete raft, which. will project a foot above the surface, and on this the new building will be erected. The steel piling fence below; will pre- | vent any spreading out of the soil through the weight of the raft and building, so that no subsidence is anticipated.
