BOXING RING

INCREASE IN PATRONAGE ANOTHER FINE PROGRAMME The excellent patronage which has been accorded its programmes at the Town Hall recently must be very gratifying to officials of the Auckland Boxing Association, more especially when it is remembered that for some considerable timo its efforts to arrange the best attractions available met with misfortune. The very fine display provided by Young Gildo and Snowy Clark on Monday night pleased a crowded house immensely, and a return bout would surely fill the Town Hall once more. Tho contest demonstrated that Gildo is just as fast and clever as when he was hero previously, while, in addition, he appears to bo hitting harder than hitherto. As for Clark, he also showed remarkable speed, but it was his power of recuperation after taking severe punishment that won him general admiration. It transpired after tho contest between Bob McLachlan and Jack Duncan that the former has not properly recovered from an attack of influenza. Thnt no doubt accounted for his disappointing showing. Another splendid programme has been arranged by the Auckland Boxing Association for next Monday week There will again be two professional bouts, Percy Kelly and Brian McKay meeting in the preliminary, while in the major contest Vic Caltaux will challenge Neville Mudgwav for the New Zealand welter-weight championship. The Papatoetoe Gymnasium Boxing Club will stage a carnival at the local Town Hall on Thursday, July 21. Nine Auckland amateurs will meet nine from the Papatoetoe gymnasium, six being exhibition matches and three for special trophies. A special amateur bout will bo between the well-known Auckland amateurs, Bay Nixon and Bon Gurr. Vic Caltaux, 'Young Gildo and Snowy Clark, the well-known professionals, have promised their assistance, while the following officials of the Auckland Boxing Association will be in attend-ance:—-Messrs. B. Meale, W. E. Dervan, J. H. Sloan, A. B. Joplin and W. T. Harper.
