MONTHS Returns of overseas tratio for the month of May, a summary of which lias been issued by the Customs Department in Wellington, show the value of exports, with specie excluded, to have been £6,271,000 in New Zealand currency, or £'.'546,000 more than in the corresponding month last year. The figure is the highest for any May since 1033, being just over double tho value of exports in that year. Imports wore £2.57,000 lower in value than in .May last year, but with that exception were the highest for the month since 1933. Following is a comparison of the returns for May in the last six years, values being for commodities only, exclusive of specie, all expressed in New Zealand currency:— Exports Imports Excess M H y C £ L' .. 3,120,000 2.073,000 i,0n,000 1034 .. 1,710,000 2,343,000 2,3«7,000 i!«r> .. i, 000 3.024,000 i ,302,000 ! 03H .. 5,075,000 3,240,000 1,820 00.) 1037 .. 5,0-5,000 4,111,000 1,181.000 1038 ~ 0,271,000 4,181,000 2,087,000 A comparison for the five months, January to May, in the past six years, is as follows: Jan.- Exports Imports Excess Mav £ £ £ 1033 . 10,062,000 10,502,000 0,070,000 1931 . 25,203,000 12,028,000 16,175,000 19F15 . 23,882,000 1-1.302,000 8,520,000 1030 . 30,010,000 16,427,000 13,583,000 1037 . 36,007,000 21,767,000 14,810,000 1038 . 31,303,000 23,520,000 7,567,000 Kxports for the first 11 months of the production year, which opens in July, are valued at £3,122,000 less than those for the same period last season. The figure remains high in comparison with those recorded up to May in production seasons stretching hack to 1032-33. Imports are £7,84-1,000 higher in value than in the last production season. They are over £17.000.000 greater than in the first 11 months of 1935-36. The valuation is substantially more than double that for the same portion of the 1933-34 season. As a consequence of this increase in imports the balance over them of export values in the current, season, £2.046,000, is bv a considerable margin the smallest for any similar period during the past six production years. The most marked contrast is with 1933-34, when the excess of exports for 11 months was valued at £20.872.000. The figures for the 11 months, compared with those in the five previous seasons, are: Jtilv- Exportii Imports Excess May £ C € 1932-33 40.501.000 27.304,000 13.227,000 1033-34 45,840,000 2-1.074,000 20,872,000 1034-35 30,720.000 31.045.000 7,781.000 1035-30 40,438,000 30,025,000 13,413 000 1030-37 50.128.000 40,1 iO,OOO '13,012,000 1037-38 5(5,006,000 53,000,000 2,016,000 j Exports of specie during Mav, excluded from the figures previously given, were valued at £250, and imports at £ll6O.
