TREHATA BUFFETED

HOVF/-TO OFF CUYIER 64 MILES IN 24 HOURS THE HUNTINGDON DELAYED Nearly two days late on her voyage from New York, the A. and A. Line's chartered steamer Trehata reached Auckland yesterday morning after being hove-to 100 miles eastward of Cuvier Island on Monday. A westerly gnle was met by the Trehata and gusts of wind of hurricane force were experienced. The gale was first encountered on Saturday, when the steamer's daily average log of 260 miles fell to 163. It had dropped to 143 on Sunday, and on Monday only 64 miles were logged. Wireless advice received yesterday from the Federal Lino steamer Huntingdon, in ballast from Newcastle-on-Tvne, stated that heavy weather had further delayed her arrival at Opua. She is now due at Opua at six o'clock to-morrow evening, 18 hours behind time. The Japanese steamer Shanghai Marti, en route from Miike, advised yesterday that she would arrive at Auckland at six o'clock this evening, six days earlier than expected. It is thought that her early arrival is the result of omitting a five days' stay at Walpole Island, between Noumea and Auckland. The Shanghai Maru was to have loaded guano from lighters olf the island, and, as the anchorage is open and dangerous, it is believed that rough weather prevented her calling.
