BRILLIANT PLAY

July 2 Newcastle, with its four star players in the State side against Queensland, was no match for New Zealand at the Newcastle sports ground. Excellent combination, backed up by a faultless game by Hemi nt fullback, won the match for the visitors by 30 points to 19. The teams were as follows: —

Newcastle. —Fullback: J. Steggall; threequarters: R. Gill, A. Bull, «T. Bonnyman, C. Hazleton; five-eighth: 0. Kerr; halfback: 0. Perry; forwards: G. Favell, C. Brodie, G. Olivera, It. Roddam, A. Parsons, A. Russell. New Zealand. —Fullback: J. Hemi; threequarters: J. Smith, W. Tittleton, R. Chase, R. Brown; five-eighth, W. P. Brimble; halfback: W. Brimble; forwards: J. Anderson, J. McLeod, W. McNeight, G. Orman, W. Glynn, J. Cootes.

Referee. —Mr. W. McMahon. New Zealand's last try was one of the best seen on the ground. Thrilled by the brilliant passing and backing up the crowd of 5000 cheered for several minutes. Picking up in his own twentyfive, W. Brimble sent the ball to Tittleton, who passed to Chaso. W. Brimble took it again and the ball then went to W. P. Brimble and on to Anderson, Tittleton and McLeod, for the last-named to score and Hemi to add the goal. It was League football at its best.

Now Zealand was badly beaten for the ball from the scrum, but the forwards, led by Anderson and McLeod, broke so quickly that the Newcastle movements rarely got beyond the fiveeighth. Newcastle looked like pulling the game out of the fire in the second half and scored 11 points to New Zealand's eight, but they were individual efforts.

Perry, at halfback, played almost a lone hand for Newcastle in attack. His try from half-way, when ho beat seven men, was a brilliant efTort and the New Zealanders joined in the applause. Only plucky tackling saved Newcastle from a heavier defeat. Time and time again, the New Zcalanders bombarded Newcastle territory, always with several players in support, only to be thrown back by the dour Newcastle defenders. Right to the end they threw themselves at tho flying feet of the New Zealanders, and it was a tired thirteen that trooped off the field at the end. The game was played in an excellent spirit, and tho ambulance attendants had practically nothing to do. Tries were scored for New Zealand bv Anderson, Tittlcton, McLeod (2),Cootes and Smith, and Hemi kicked six goals. For Newcastle, Perry (2), Gill (2) and Bull scored tries, and Bonnyman kicked two goals.

QUEENSLAND BEATEN CLOSE INTER-STATE MATCH (Received July 3, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. July 3 The New South Wales Rugby League team heat Queensland by 20 point* to 19. after Queensland had led by 17 points to 8 at half-time.
